by Lance Armstrong ,
Sally Jenkins (Contributor)
The inspiring journey of world-class hero Lance Armstrong,
from the dark night of advanced cancer through his dramatic victory in the 1999
Tour de France, and beyond.
In 1996, twenty-four-year-old
Lance Armstrong was ranked the number-one cyclist
in the world. But that October, "The Golden Boy of American Cycling"
was sidelined by excruciating pain. Tests revealed advanced testicular cancer
that had spread to his lungs and brain. His chance for recovery was as low as
twenty percent.
Armstrong embarked on the most aggressive form of chemotherapy available and
underwent surgery to remove cancer that the treatments couldn't reach. Five
months after his diagnosis, he resumed training under a cloud of uncertainty,
and the path back to competition wasn't smooth. It took a ride with friends
through the mountains of North Carolina for Armstrong to rediscover his genuine
love of the sport, and to rededicate himself to its pursuit...

With a stunning win in the
2002 Tour de France, Armstrong becomes the fourth cyclist ever to have
won four consecutive tours! This newest chapter in cycling history
unfolds in a Tour marked with stunning break-aways, brilliant attacks,
and an extraordinary effort by Postal, which many observers now calling
one of the best teams in the last 50 years! A win in the prologue time
trial signals Lance's plans to win, but then a wild first week ensues.
When Armstrong loses the Stage 9 time trial to Kelme's Botero, many

day in the Pyrennes. Roberto Heras single-handily devastates the field
with a powerful pace on the climb to LaMongie, and then it is Lance,
Heras and ONCE'S Beloki near the summit when Armstrong jumps clear for a
stage win and a lead he will never relinquish. Lance wins the next stage

stunning breakaway. "Ja-Ja" fails to win, but he keeps
attacking on Stages 16 and 17. ONCE battles to find a chink in the
Postal armor, but the boys in blue dominant the race to the end in what
Lance calls, "the year of the team." Lance puts his cap on the
race with a convincing victory in the final time trial. In the end it's
